Final Fantasy VIII, a 1999 role-playing game developed by Square for the PlayStation, is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Set in a fantasy world with science fiction elements, players control Squall Leonhart, a young mercenary drawn into a conflict sparked by the sorceress Edea Kramer. Squall must grapple with his role as a leader and develops a romance with Rinoa Heartilly as he fights the forces manipulating Edea. The game broke from series tradition, featuring realistically proportioned characters, a vocal theme song, and abandoning magic points for casting spells. The battle system introduced 'Guardian Forces' which could be summoned, and players could 'draw' magic to enhance character attributes. A collectible card game called 'Triple Triad' was also included. Final Fantasy VIII was a commercial and critical success, selling over 9.6 million copies worldwide. Enemies in the game include 'Goomani' which is a monster that uses various attacks and magic, and 'Lefty', a large hand-like enemy that attempts to draw magic from players. Both enemies appear in different areas and have different resistances to various forms of attack.
