  • Chinese: 食人花
  • Japanese: オチュー
  • English: Ochu
The Ochu (オチュー, Ochū), is a recurring plant-like monster in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in the original Final Fantasy. It's typically depicted as a large plant with two to four thorny arms and a ring of flower petals resembling a skirt. Ochus are known for their Sleep and Poison-based attacks, and have occasionally appeared as variants of the Malboro. In Final Fantasy VIII, Ochus are found in forests near Timber and on the Island Closest to Heaven. Its attacks include Drink Magic, a counter to magic that removes a random magic unit from a party member; Ochu Dance, which inflicts Slow and Curse; and Earthquake, which damages all non-floating units. It is weak to fire and ice, and its 'Ochu Tentacle' can be stolen. In the Triple Triad mini-game of Final Fantasy VIII, the Ochu appears as a level 3 monster card, used for play or transformed into 'Ochu Tentacle' via Quistis Card Mod. The name 'Ochu' comes from Dungeons & Dragons' Otyugh, and the Japanese pronunciation is close to 'o-chuugh'.
