Gilles de Rais, also known as "Bluebeard," appears in multiple forms in Fate/Grand Order (FGO). He was originally a 15th-century French nobleman and marshal who fought alongside Joan of Arc in the Hundred Years' War and was hailed as a hero. However, after Joan of Arc's execution, he fell into despair, began committing heinous crimes, and ultimately degenerated into the infamous serial killer, becoming the prototype for the fairytale "Bluebeard."
In FGO, Gilles de Rais primarily appears in two classes: Caster and Saber. His Caster form is depicted as severely mentally corrupted with a twisted aesthetic, capable of summoning otherworldly monsters. His Saber form showcases his knightly appearance before his fall. While honest and brave, he retains his obsessive infatuation with Joan of Arc. Additionally, the game features a "Bluebeard" form that bridges Caster and Saber, further showcasing his degeneration.
Gilles de Rais is a complex and contradictory character in the game, possessing both his past glory and piety, as well as his fallen madness and cruelty. His obsession with Joan of Arc and twisted affection for her permeates all his forms, becoming an annotation of his tragic fate.
