Michael Kaufmann is a significant character in the Silent Hill series, first appearing in the original Silent Hill and also featured in Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. He is the director of Alchemilla Hospital, located in Central Silent Hill. While appearing to be a mere hospital employee, Kaufmann is deeply associated with the cult known as "The Order" and Dahlia Gillespie. He collaborates with Dahlia on drug trafficking and oversees the care of the severely burned Alessa Gillespie. Kaufmann is portrayed as a self-serving and opportunistic individual who prioritizes his personal gain at all costs. He developed and trafficked the hallucinogenic drug PTV derived from the local plant, "White Claudia". In Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Kaufmann's character is reimagined as a psychoanalyst, attempting to help the protagonist overcome their past trauma. This version of Kaufmann is known for his blunt personality and dry sense of humor, a stark contrast to the complex and sinister persona of the original game.
