Dr. Michael Kaufmann is a significant character in the Silent Hill series, first appearing in the 1999 game, Silent Hill. He is the director of Alchemilla Hospital in Central Silent Hill and a secret member of the local religious cult, “The Order.” While outwardly in charge of the hospital, he is secretly allied with Dahlia Gillespie, the leader of The Order, and involved in drug trafficking and hiding Alessa Gillespie. He manipulates and exploits others for his own gain, such as forcing nurse Lisa Garland to care for the severely burned Alessa, providing her with drugs to control her. Kaufmann appears as a secondary antagonist in Silent Hill: Origins, and in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, he is a psychiatrist who attempts to help Cheryl Mason (the other half of Alessa) overcome her psychological trauma. His character is complex and controversial, being both a sinister manipulator and somewhat self-preserving. Kaufmann's fate varies across different games, but he remains a key figure in driving the plot forward.
