John P. Sater, also known as JP, is a character in the Silent Hill series, first appearing in Silent Hill: Downpour and Anne's Story. He was a former tour guide of Devil's Pit. During his tenure as a tour guide, he was responsible for a severe accident involving a mine train he was driving while intoxicated, resulting in the deaths of eight children. This incident caused him immense psychological trauma. After the accident, he tried to defend himself but failed, ultimately losing his job and facing social condemnation. Filled with despair and guilt, Sater eventually commits suicide in front of the protagonist, Murphy Pendleton. In Anne's Story, he makes a brief appearance, possibly as a ghost, attempting to stop the ghostly children. Sater displays a contradictory personality in the game, on one hand, he is passionate about the history of Devil's Pit, while on the other hand, he is tormented by his past sins. He is both indifferent to Murphy and seems to know his past transgressions, adding to his mystery. His story reflects common themes in the Silent Hill series such as guilt, self-redemption, and despair.
