Ikaris is a prominent member of the Eternals and has been a protector of Earth and humanity for centuries. His origins trace back over 20,000 years, when he was created by the Celestials and sent to Earth. He has a close relationship with fellow Eternal Sersi, whom he was once married to. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ikaris is portrayed by Richard Madden. In the film *Eternals*, Ikaris is depicted as loyal to the Celestials' directives, willing to betray his fellow Eternals to fulfill the Celestials’ goals, and ultimately commits suicide due to guilt over his actions. Ikaris's name is derived from Icarus from Greek mythology. In some stories, Ikaris married a human woman and had a son also named Icarus, who died in an accident. To honor his son, Ikaris adopted his name. The character has played various roles in different Marvel stories and is a key character in the *Eternals* storyline.
