Northstar (real name: Jean-Paul Beaubier) is a fictional superhero appearing in Marvel Comics. He first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #120, created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Northstar is the first openly gay superhero in Marvel Comics, and the first character to come out in a book published by Marvel Comics. He is a founding member of the Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight, along with his twin sister Aurora, and later a member of the X-Men. Northstar possesses superhuman speed, the ability to fly, and can manipulate light energy. He was a professional skier before becoming a crimefighter. Northstar married his partner, Kyle Jinadu, in a wedding that was the first depiction of a same-sex marriage in mainstream comics. His stories often deal with themes of identity, prejudice, and the responsibilities of being a superhero. As a speedster hero, Northstar is often characterized by his haughty and confident personality, while also possessing a good heart.
