Shadowcat, whose real name is Katherine Anne "Kitty" Pryde, is a fictional character and mutant superheroine in Marvel Comics. She first appeared in *The Uncanny X-Men* #129 (January 1980), co-created by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne. Kitty has the ability to phase through solid matter, rendering her intangible while using this power. She is a member of the X-Men and was a founding member of the British mutant team, Excalibur. Initially portrayed as a "kid sister" to many of the older members of the team, Kitty has grown into a capable fighter. She is schooled in fighting techniques and has ninja stealth training, which combines with her powers to make her one of the X-Men's most proficient and reliable combatants. She is often deployed on surveillance and espionage missions. In addition to the X-Men, she also had a brief stint with the Guardians of the Galaxy and appeared as Star-Lord. In the *Marauders* series, she was known as Captain Kate Pryde and the Red Queen of the Hellfire Trading Company. Later, she rejoined the X-Men in the *Fall of X* relaunch, using the name Shadowkat. She has also used the codenames Sprite and Ariel.
