The Absorbing Man (Carl "Crusher" Creel) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, he first appeared in Journey into Mystery #114 (March 1965). He is a former boxer and criminal who gained his powers after drinking a liquid laced with a mystical potion by Loki. The Absorbing Man can absorb the properties of any material he touches and transform his body into that material, gaining its physical attributes and abilities. He is often depicted as a villain, battling superheroes such as Thor and Hulk. The Absorbing Man has been a member of various villainous groups, including the Masters of Evil and the Lethal Legion. While mostly a villain, he has occasionally shown antiheroic traits, such as when he absorbed Captain America's shield to stop an explosion during the Civil War event. He also had a romantic relationship and even married the villainess Titania. The Absorbing Man has appeared in comics, animation, video games, and live-action media, portrayed by Brian Patrick Wade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
