Ego, also known as Ego the Living Planet, is a fictional character in Marvel Comics, first appearing in Thor #132. It is a sentient planet with immense power and the ability to control its own matter. In the comics, Ego's origin is often described as a scientist merging with a planet when the planet's sun went nova. Ego has clashed with numerous Marvel heroes, including Thor, the Fantastic Four, and the Silver Surfer. It frequently attempts to expand its influence and devour other planets, but is always ultimately thwarted by the heroes. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ego is portrayed as an ancient Celestial being and the biological father of Star-Lord Peter Quill. In the films, Ego's goal is to devour the entire universe through the 'Expansion' and transform it into an extension of himself. The film version of Ego also has the power to shape his body and has created a human-like avatar. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Star-Lord eventually realizes Ego's evil plan and defeats him.
Ego is not only a powerful villain, but also a complex and multi-faceted character, with deep meaning hidden behind its motives and actions. Both the comic and movie versions of Ego play an important role in the Marvel Universe, and both demonstrate an arrogant and conceited personality, considering their own existence to be supreme.
