Galactus is a fictional character appearing in Marvel Comics, first debuting in Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966). Originally a mortal man named Galan from a universe before the Big Bang, he merged with the Sentience of the Universe as his own universe ended, becoming a cosmic entity who consumes planets to sustain his life force. Galactus is not driven by malice but by a survival instinct. He often employs a herald, like the Silver Surfer, to seek out suitable planets for him. He is a powerful being with cosmic abilities that allow him to manipulate matter and energy, even destroying planets. Galactus frequently serves as both an antagonist and protagonist in the Marvel Universe and is considered crucial to its balance. Despite destroying planets, he is also regarded as a necessary part of the universe, as he is destined to give back more than he takes. In different storylines, Galactus has displayed varying roles, from a simple devourer to a seeker of knowledge or a messenger of cosmic destiny.
