Monty Mole is a common enemy in the Super Mario series, first appearing in Super Mario World. They are fossorial moles that typically pop out of holes in the ground, either to chase Mario or throw rocks at him. Monty Moles appear in many games, with variations such as the Mega Mole and Morty Mole. In some games, they appear as gunners or tank drivers, like operating cannons in Super Mario Sunshine or driving a tank in New Super Mario Bros. Monty Moles' design may have been inspired by Rocky Wrenches from Super Mario Bros. 3. They can typically be defeated by any attack method in the games. Besides being enemies, Monty Moles also appear in minigames, such as Whack-a-Monty in New Super Mario Bros.
