Luma, known as Chiko (チコ) in Japan, are star-like creatures that first appeared in the Super Mario Galaxy series. They have a teardrop shape and come in various colors, most commonly yellow. Similar to Power Stars, Lumas are more rounded and have the ability to speak. They can transform into various forms, ranging from small objects to entire galaxies. Lumas consider Rosalina their 'mama' and primarily reside in the Comet Observatory, while some follow Lubba on Starship Mario. Their name comes from the Latin word 'lumen,' meaning 'light,' hinting at their future transformation into stars. Different colored Lumas have unique abilities, such as yellow Lumas transforming into Launch Stars, red Lumas guarding Red Stars, green Lumas guarding Trial Galaxies, and blue Lumas transforming into Pull Stars. In Super Mario Galaxy, Lumas sacrifice themselves to stop a black hole, with hints of their rebirth. They also appear in games like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, and Super Smash Bros.
