Koopa Troopas, known in Japanese as Nokonoko, are common enemies in the Super Mario franchise. They are foot soldiers of the Koopa Troop, typically under the direct leadership of Bowser. Koopa Troopas are turtle-like creatures with removable shells that come in various colors, most commonly red and green. Green Koopa Troopas usually walk in a straight line until they hit a wall or fall off an edge, while red Koopa Troopas patrol back and forth on platforms. Since Super Mario 64, some Koopa Troopas have appeared that are not loyal to Bowser, and some have even become allies to Mario, appearing as playable characters in various spin-off games. Koopa shells are frequently used in the Mario series, as projectiles and platforms. They are one of Mario's most common foes, alongside Goombas. The design was originally based on the Shellcreepers from Mario Bros. in 1983, and the Koopa Troopa debuted in Super Mario Bros. in 1985.
