Thwomps, known as ドッスン (Dossun) in Japanese, are recurring enemies in the Super Mario franchise. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and are large, typically square-shaped stone creatures often featuring a face. Thwomps are usually stationary in the air, but when Mario or another playable character approaches, they suddenly drop down to try and crush them. They are commonly found in castle levels and have various subspecies like Thwimps and Whomps.
Thwomp designs have varied over time, sometimes featuring spikes and sometimes smooth edges. In the Mario Kart series, Thwomps behave differently, repeatedly slamming onto the ground rather than only falling when a character is near. In Super Mario Maker 2, Thwomps can even be used as terrain. Thwomps have also appeared in various forms in the Super Smash Bros. series, including a form that Kirby can copy and an assist trophy. Overall, Thwomps are an iconic and memorable enemy in the Super Mario series, known for their sudden drops and crushing attacks.
