"Whisper of the Heart" (Japanese: 耳をすませば, Mimi wo Sumaseba) is a 1995 Japanese animated coming-of-age romance film directed by Yoshifumi Kondō and written by Hayao Miyazaki. Produced by Studio Ghibli, the film is based on the 1989 manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi. It tells the story of Shizuku Tsukishima, a junior high school student who loves to read and discovers a common library borrower named Seiji Amasawa. This encounter leads her on a journey of self-discovery as she pursues her own dreams while also developing a connection with Seiji. He aspires to become a violin maker, and their mutual ambitions fuel a tender and inspiring relationship. The film also incorporates Shizuku's fantasy story, adding a layer of imagination to the narrative. "Whisper of the Heart" is known for its beautiful animation, heartfelt story, and memorable soundtrack, including the theme song "Take Me Home, Country Roads." This film marks the directorial debut of Yoshifumi Kondō, who was tragically considered Miyazaki's successor but passed away prematurely in 1998.
