It has been serialized online in Takeshobo's digital publication Web Comic Gamma since October 2012, and has been collected in 13 tankōbon volumes. The story follows an orphaned girl named Riko, who befriends a part-robot boy named Reg, and together they descend into the titular "Abyss", a giant hole leading deep into the Earth, hoping to explore it and find Riko's mother. The series has been adapted into an anime television series produced by Kinema Citrus, with the first season airing from July to September 2017, the second season, titled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, airing from July to September 2022, and a sequel film, Dawn of the Deep Soul, premiering in Japan in January 2020. The story is set around a massive abyss, filled with strange creatures and ancient relics, attracting adventurers. Riko aspires to become a White Whistle delver like her mother. During her explorations, she encounters Reg, a robot boy with amnesia, and they embark on a journey to explore the abyss, uncover its secrets, and find Riko’s missing mother. The series is highly praised for its captivating world-building, complex characters, and emotionally resonant plot.
