Gegege no Kitaro

GeGeGe no Kitaro, also known as Kitaro, is a Japanese manga series created by Shigeru Mizuki, originally titled Hakaba Kitaro. The series is known for popularizing the folklore creatures known as yōkai. The story centers around Kitaro, the last survivor of the Ghost Tribe. He works with his father, Medama-Oyaji, and other yōkai companions to maintain peace between humans and yōkai. The 2018 anime is the sixth anime adaptation of the series, produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original 1968 anime. This version was produced by Toei Animation and aired on Fuji Television. It is set in the 21st century, where people have largely forgotten about yōkai. When unexplained phenomena trouble humans, 13-year-old Mana Inuyama writes to the Yōkai Post, seeking answers, and thus begins her adventure. This anime series focuses more on social commentary, presenting darker themes like exploitative companies and the negative impacts of social media. Kitaro's personality is also revised to emphasize his view that yōkai and humans shouldn't be too close, although his friendship with Mana makes him more open-minded.
