"Cells at Work! Code Black" (はたらく細胞BLACK) is a Japanese manga series written by Shigemitsu Harada and illustrated by Issei Hatsuyoshi, a spin-off of Akane Shimizu's "Cells at Work!" with Shimizu supervising. It was serialized in Kodansha's "Morning" magazine from 2018 to 2021. Unlike the original series which is set in a healthy body, "Code Black" is set in an unhealthy body plagued by poor lifestyle choices. The story follows the anthropomorphized cells as they struggle to maintain the body amid the chaos caused by alcohol, smoking, stress, and lack of sleep. An anime adaptation aired from January to March 2021. The main characters include rookie red blood cell AA2153 and white blood cell U-1196, who work tirelessly to keep the body functioning. The series portrays the damage caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and the struggles of workers in harsh environments, from the perspective of cells.
