Myouren is an enigmatic character in the Touhou Project, primarily known as the elder brother of Byakuren Hijiri and the one who taught her Buddhist magic. His death triggered Byakuren's fear of mortality and her subsequent pursuit of immortality through magical means. Although a key background figure, Myouren has not appeared directly in any of the games. He is believed to be based on a real-life Buddhist priest and appears in various stories, particularly in the Shigisan-engi Emaki, a renowned picture scroll detailing his tale. He is typically envisioned as an older man and, though lacking official artwork, he is often portrayed in line with his appearance in the Shigisan-engi. His Japanese name, 'Hijiri Myouren,' signifies 'holy' and 'fate lotus,' reflecting his spiritual nature and his connection to Buddhism. While not directly active, his existence is pivotal to Byakuren's motivation, influencing the formation of her temple, Myouren Temple. Myouren's image is usually tied to themes of Buddhism and mysticism.
