Despite residing on Youkai Mountain, she lives a primitive lifestyle, even by Gensokyo standards. Yamanba are known for their independence and aversion to organization, maintaining a non-aggression pact with the communal Tengu. Villagers believe that people who disappear in the mountains are dealt with by Yamanba, but in reality, Yamanba typically drive away lost adults while taking in and raising lost children. Nemuno has no interest in the world outside her domain, resulting in very little information about her, making her an enigmatic character.
