Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, also known as Tsukuyomi, is the moon kami in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion. In the Touhou Project, Tsukuyomi is portrayed as the founder and ruler of the Lunar Capital. According to Chapter 3 of Cage in Lunatic Runagate, she is the founder of the Lunar Capital and the lord of the night. Her exact age is unknown, but it is likely in the millions. Tsukuyomi initially realized that Earth was an impure, blood-stained world that was stealing life from all living beings. Therefore, she left Earth and, along with her most trusted relatives, including Eirin Yagokoro, founded the Lunar Capital. The Lunar Capital lacked the impurities of Earth, and those who resided there forsook any lifespan, meaning they were neither alive nor dead, but not truly immortal, still standing a faint chance of death or injury. Long ago, Lord Tsukuyomi was shocked that the scientific community on Earth had realized that the world is built on probabilities. Fearing that the beings of Earth and their impurities might reach the Lunar Capital, the denizens of the Moon have been on alert since then. In mythology, she is one of the "three noble children" born from Izanagi's right eye when he was cleansing himself of his sins. Alternatively, she was born from a mirror made of white copper in Izanagi's right hand. Tsukuyomi angered Amaterasu, the sun goddess, by killing Ukemochi, the goddess of food, leading to the separation of day and night.
