Chang'e

Chang'e (じょうが), is a mysterious character in the Touhou Project, a Lunarian goddess residing on the Moon. In the game, she gained immortality by drinking the Hourai Elixir, but was subsequently imprisoned in the Lunar Capital. Chang'e's name and identity are shrouded in mystery, her true name being unpronounceable by earthlings. She was once the mistress of the moon rabbits, but now, the moon rabbits pound mochi daily as atonement for her sin. Chang'e's story draws inspiration from the Chinese moon goddess Chang'e, though the Touhou Project adds its own unique twists to her background, making her a complex and compelling character. In Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, her existence becomes central to the plot as Junko and Hecatia harbor intense hatred toward her and plan to invade the Lunar Capital. Despite being imprisoned, her past and her relations with other characters remain pivotal parts of the narrative, enticing players and fans to delve deeper into this fictional world. Her name is read as "Jouga" in Japanese, but in the Western fan community, her Chinese name "Chang'e" is more frequently used.
