Kutsutsura (沓頬, くつつら) are a type of youkai known as tsukumogami in the Touhou Project series. Tsukumogami are youkai that are created when tools or objects are inhabited by spirits after a long period of time. Kutsutsura are said to originate from either shoes or crowns that have undergone transformations over many years. According to legend, shoe-type kutsutsura steal watermelons, while crown-type kutsutsura steal plums. In Touhou Project, although both types are mentioned, only the shoe-type kutsutsura have been shown. These kutsutsura are typically depicted as shoes with eyes and legs, sometimes even exhibiting human-like facial features. They are believed to harbor resentment due to being disrespectfully discarded, thus harboring animosity towards humans. As a type of tsukumogami, Kutsutsura showcases the unique interpretation of traditional Japanese youkai and folklore in Touhou Project, enriching the game's world and character diversity. Although not a major character in the games, their existence highlights concepts within the game about the souls of discarded items and vengeance, adding an interesting cultural and narrative layer.
