Squirtle (Japanese: ゼニガメ, Zenigame) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It is one of the three first partner Pokémon of the Kanto region, alongside Bulbasaur and Charmander. Squirtle resembles a small, light-blue turtle with purple or reddish eyes, and a tough brown shell on its back with a pale yellow underbelly. It has a squirrel-like tail that curls inward. Squirtle can withdraw into its shell for protection, and its shell's streamlined shape allows it to swim quickly through water. It can also spray foamy water from its mouth. Squirtle is relatively rare in the wild, often found near ponds, lakes, and mountain rivers. In the anime, Squirtle is famous for its "Squirtle Squad," with one of them becoming a companion of the main character, Ash. It evolves into Wartortle at level 16, and then into Blastoise at level 36. Squirtle is well-loved for its adorable appearance and prominent role in the games and anime, making it one of the most popular Pokémon in the franchise.
