Caterpie (Japanese: キャタピー Kyatapii) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It resembles a green caterpillar with a yellow underside and ring-shaped markings on its sides that resemble eyes. A notable characteristic of Caterpie is the bright red antenna on its head, which it uses to emit a foul odor to deter predators. Caterpie has suction cups on its feet, allowing it to effortlessly climb surfaces. It is known for its voracious appetite, consuming vast amounts of leaves, even those larger than itself. Caterpie sheds its skin multiple times before cocooning itself in silk to evolve into Metapod, then eventually Butterfree. It is commonly found in forests and jungles and is a popular choice for new trainers due to its ease of capture and rapid growth. In the anime, Ash Ketchum owned a Caterpie, which was the first Pokémon he caught in the wild.
