Butterfree (Japanese: バタフリー) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves from Metapod starting at level 10 and is the final evolution of Caterpie. Butterfree resembles a vaguely anthropomorphic butterfly with a purple body and light blue limbs. Its upper legs resemble small, three-fingered hands, while the lower pair resemble long, digit-less feet. Butterfree has black antennae, a light blue snout with small fangs, and large red compound eyes. Its wings are white with black venation. Female Butterfree have black oval scales on their lower wings, while males have white ones. Butterfree feeds on nectar and can detect flowers from a distance, carrying it with the hairs on its legs. Its wings are covered in a water-repellent powder, allowing it to fly even in the rain. Butterfree also uses its wings to scatter poisonous powder for defense. In the Pokémon anime, Ash's Butterfree was a key character and its departure with a pink Butterfree is considered a touching moment for many fans.
