Bayleef, known as ベイリーフ (Bayleaf) in Japanese, is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. It evolves from Chikorita starting at level 16 and evolves into Meganium starting at level 32. Bayleef is a quadrupedal, pale-yellow reptilian Pokémon that resembles a sauropod dinosaur. It has a long neck, red eyes, a short, rounded snout, and a stubby tail. Each foot has a single, light gray nail. Sprouting from its forehead is a green leaf that curves back over its head, and around its neck are a series of tightly curled leaves containing small tree shoots. The aroma from the leaves around its neck has a spicy scent and provides energizing, stimulating, and healing effects. It is rarely found in grasslands, and according to Pokémon Sleep, it invigorates sleeping Pokémon nearby. Bayleef's design is based on sauropods, specifically the Apatosaurus, with its plant features possibly from bay laurel leaves, whose oil is used in aromatherapy. The name Bayleef is derived from bay leaf, a cooking herb known for its pungent smell.
