Torkoal (Japanese: コータス Kōtasu) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is a rust-red tortoise with a black shell that has seven coal vents. Torkoal inhabits mountains and volcanic areas, where it searches for coal deposits. It stores coal in its hollow shell and burns it for energy. In battle, Torkoal releases smoke from its shell and nostrils, creating a sound similar to a locomotive horn. It communicates by altering the pitch, duration, and volume of this sound. When threatened, Torkoal uses Smokescreen to escape. The speed at which it expels smoke indicates its health. Torkoal does not evolve. Ash Ketchum owned a Torkoal in the Pokémon anime. In Pokémon GO, Torkoal is a region-exclusive Pokémon found in West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia.
