Huntail, known as ハンテール in Japanese, is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It evolves from Clamperl when traded while holding a Deep Sea Tooth. Huntail has an eel-like, slender blue body with circular spots that have white centers and orange edges. It possesses orange fins along its back, and its tail is round with small fins protruding outwards. Huntail lives in the deep sea where light is scarce, but it has very keen eyes. It uses its fish-shaped tail, which has glowing eye spots, to lure prey before swallowing them whole. Its body is adapted to withstand the crushing pressures of the deep. According to folklore, a Huntail washing ashore is an omen of misfortune. Huntail has made various appearances in the anime, portrayed as an aggressive, yet sometimes gentle creature. Its design is likely inspired by deep-sea creatures like the gulper eel or viperfish, or perhaps the rarely-seen oarfish due to its long body and orange fins.
