Torterra (Japanese: ドダイトス Dodaitosu) is a dual-type Grass/Ground Pokémon introduced in Generation IV. It is the final evolution of Turtwig, evolving from Grotle at level 32. Torterra is a large, quadrupedal Pokémon resembling a cross between an ankylosaur and a tortoise. It has a dark-green shell with a white rim and diamond shape on its back, topped with a large tree and three spiked rocks. Its body is mostly dark-green above and brown underneath, with silver spikes on either side of its head, red eyes, and a black beak. Torterra is often found in natural areas with greenery, migrating in search of clean water, leading to the misconception of them being "moving forests". Many small Pokémon reside on its back, even living their entire lives there. While generally docile, Torterra can retaliate forcefully using moves like Wood Hammer if it or its inhabitants are threatened. Its strong offensive and defensive capabilities make it a reliable partner for trainers in the Sinnoh region. The Japanese name, Dodaitosu, is derived from the Japanese words for “earth element” (doton), “large” (dai), and the English word “tortoise”.
