Popplio, known as Ashimari in Japanese, is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is one of the starter Pokémon of the Alola region, resembling a blue sea lion. Popplio has large eyes, a long white snout with a pink round nose, and black whiskers. It has a light blue ruff around its neck and four flippers, with the front flippers being larger than the rear ones. Popplio can blow bubbles of water from its nose, using them for battle and acrobatic stunts. It is an excellent swimmer, reaching speeds of up to 25 mph. Popplio evolves into Brionne at level 17 and then into Primarina at level 34. The design of Popplio is likely inspired by sea lions, Hawaiian monk seals, and circus clowns. Its name is a combination of "pop" (as in popping bubbles) and "lio" (Greek for "lion", possibly referring to sea lion). Despite initial mixed reactions from fans, Popplio has gained more appreciation due to its evolutions.
