Pokémon Red and Green are the foundational titles of the Pokémon series, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy in 1996. Initially released in Japan as Pocket Monsters Red and Pocket Monsters Green, followed by the special edition Pocket Monsters Blue, they are role-playing games where players assume the role of a Pokémon Trainer, adventuring in the Kanto region, collecting 151 Pokémon, challenging Gym Leaders and the Elite Four, and ultimately becoming the champion. The core gameplay involves exploration, catching, and training Pokémon, as well as trading and battling using the Game Link Cable. The game pioneered the dual-version release tradition, where players must trade Pokémon between versions to complete the Pokédex. With its unique collection and trading system, coupled with multiplayer battling, the game received critical acclaim and is considered one of the greatest games of all time. Its success launched the vast Pokémon franchise encompassing anime, manga, card games and merchandise, becoming a global cultural phenomenon.
